Last week, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) faced off in a first-responder throwdown shortly after the live announcement of CrossFit Open Workout 22.1. Local news stations were on site to capture the event, and members of the CrossFit media team met with the athletes to learn their stories and film the competition as well.
See which group secured bragging rights in our recap coverage of the throwdown during this week's live announcement of Open Workout 22.2.
Fuel for the Fire
Last year, CrossFit connected with FDNY Barbell Club President Ricardo Roman (center person in top photo above) and Vice President Sasha Gomez to learn about the club's origins and traditions.
During the interview, Roman talked about his guest appearance on the "Five-Alarm Hoagie Challenge" on the Rachael Ray Show. Roman has agreed to showcase his cooking chops yet again, this time to help you fuel your 22.2 watch party.
He hopes you'll enjoy this Baja fish taco recipe while you catch up on the NYPD and FDNY throwdown during the 22.2 announcement this Thursday at noon PT.

Baja Fish Tacos (4-6 servings)
Ingredients
- 2 lb of cod (cut into bit-size pieces)
- 2 packets of low-sodium taco seasoning
- Red cabbage (chopped)
- Red onions (finely chopped)
- Cilantro
- 2 limes
- 1½ c mayonnaise
- Adobo seasoning
- 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 jalapeño (stem removed)
- 2 cups of cotija cheese
- Cooking oil
- Whole wheat tortillas
Instructions
1. In a mixing bowl, mix the chopped red cabbage, finely chopped red onion, and cilantro. Then squeeze the juice of two limes and leave cooled in the fridge until ready to plate.
2. For the jalapeño mayo: In a blender, add the jalapeño with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, 2 dashes of adobo seasoning, and 1½ cups of mayonnaise. Pulse until well mixed and taste.
3. Prepare the pieces of fish so they will fit inside of a tortilla (should be a no more than an inch thick). Then, place the fish pieces in a small dish and add the taco seasoning. Disperse the seasoning so the fish pieces get an even coating.
4. Coat a medium-hot flat skillet with the cooking oil of your choice. Then, cook the pieces of fish for approximately 2 minutes each side, depending on thickness. The cooked fish will have a blackened look.
5. Assemble your tacos. Our recommended order is: tortilla, fish, red cabbage and onions, mayo, and cheese. Enjoy!
