The 2012 competitive season is just around the corner, with registration for the Open launching February 1st.
Last year, we witnessed some truly amazing competition among athletes and teams at the Canada West Regional. CrossFit Taranis and CrossFit Vancouver crushed their competitors, but will they be able to hold onto their dominance for one more year? CrossFit Calgary is gearing up to move from their 3rd place ranking to make it to the Games this year. Rocky Point CrossFit from Coquitlam has some serious athletes on their team this year. CrossFit Overdrive in Richmond is aiming to surpass their 9th place Regional finish.
The 2011 men’s Regional battle was a nail-biting classic, “it ain’t over till it’s over” competition. After a fierce battle, Lucas Parker of CrossFit Zone in Victoria finished at the top, with Jeremy Meredith of CrossFit Vernon in 2nd, only one point ahead of 3rd place finisher Tyson Takasaki (Crossfit Taranis). Takasaki will no doubt be out to redeem himself, and Steve Howell (CrossFit Whistler) will for sure be a powerful contender judging from his incredible performance last year.
The women’s competition last year was intense. In the end, Angie Pye and Alicia Connors, training partners from CrossFit Taranis, took the lead straight to the Games. There’s no question, both of these women are stepping up, training to maintain their momentum into 2012. But new opponents are hot on their heels. Two women to watch are from Alberta - Heather Crippen from Alberta’s newest box CrossFit 403 and Janine Walinski of CrossFit VO2 Max.
The Canada West Region had a formidable showing at the 2011 CrossFit Games in Carson, Calif. Parker was the top Canadian male placing 26th, while rookie Games competitor Pye was the top Canadian female, placing 10th overall. With formidable competition all across the West, the 2012 season is sure to be sizzling.
