Last year Bethany Shadburne made her debut at the Games, multiyear veteran Thuridur Erla Helgadottir had her best finish, and Tennil Beuerlein catapulted herself into the top 10. This episode of “Road to the Games” checks in on their training as they set their sights on Madison in 2018.
But it’s not just a window into the athletes’ competition mindsets—sometimes it’s personal.
“Have you ever smoked weed?” producer Heber Cannon asks Shadburne—formerly Branham—during one of her acupuncture sessions.
The questions continue as the producers meet the athletes’ pets and partners, cook with them, find out about their most eccentric training and recovery methods, and even capture footage of multiple shit-related emergencies.
The producers also check in on the athletes’ goals for the season.
Helgadottir, acknowledging that the competition gets stiffer every year, just wants to earn her place in the top five at the Europe Regional.
Shadburne, who fears she’s not doing as well this year as last year, similarly just wants to make it back to the Games.
Beuerlein, on the other hand, wants the big prize and is confident she can get it. She takes a mental inventory of her fellow competitors and says, “I feel like I can beat them.”
Laughing, she adds: “I feel like I’m going to.”
