When Hurricane Sandy made landfall Oct. 29 in New Jersey, it wreaked havoc. The Category 1 storm was 932 miles in diameter and packed winds of up to 100 miles per hour, making it the worst Northeast storm in 100 years.
In Part 2 of this series, Sean Pastuch, a partner of CrossFit King of the Beach in Long Island, says the box had almost 200 members coming in seven days a week before Sandy hit.
“That’s not gonna happen here for a while,” he explains.
The gym was flooded with more than 2 feet of water and reeks of fuel and sewage.
“The best thing that (the community has) done for us is provide us with a fire in our ass to get this thing going again,” Pastuch says. “As badly as we need it, they need it more.”
The process of getting back to normalcy has been hectic, says Ian Berger of O-Side CrossFit in Oceanside, N.Y.
“A lot of people have reached out to help,” he adds. “(It’s) a testament to how strong the CrossFit community is.”
