California Road Trip: Part 2

Join an all-star cast on a classic CrossFit road trip as Dave Castro, Sevan Matossian and Rob Orlando embark on a tour of California. But this trip isn’t for traditional sightseeing. The sights along this journey are barbells and top competitors as the group moves north one workout at a time.

On Day 2 of their road trip, Castro, Matossian, Orlando and Dave Lipson make their way to L.A., and Lipson talks about his daily squat of at least 450 lb. in honor of CrossFitter Amanda Miller, whose life was taken by melanoma. The website tracking Lipson’s progress and raising awareness for her charity is 365 Days of Squatting.

At CrossFit Marina outside L.A., the crew meets Games competitor David Millar (ninth in 2009), coach and medic Steve Serrano, Brian MacKenzie of CrossFit Endurance and Max Fernandez of CrossFit South County. The first workout of the day is a chipper comprising back squats, rope climbs, box jumps, rowing and tire flips. Orlando and Lipson are split up to compete against Millar and Fernandez. Can Orlando and Lipson stay on top?

One thing is for certain: Lipson’s going to puke.

“My stomach evacuates all contents upon intense exercise,” he admits.

Next up is a stop at Valley CrossFit, home to top athletes including 2010 Games champ Kristan Clever and Rebecca Voigt, seventh-place finisher in 2010.

With two workouts already checked off for the day. Will Clever be able to win another pitting her against some of the best men and women of the sport?
