I compete because doing so motivates me to fight against the ravages of time on my health and my work capacity. I enjoy the pressure competition puts on athletes to be better than those we compete against. These two mental constructs keep me focused on the various aspects of my lifestyle. Am I just a little bit better today than yesterday? What can I do today to be a tiny bit better tomorrow? The process never ends. If it does then we are sliding backwards.
