I'm 63 years old, and retired. I started cross fit because I needed to find a way to build bone density. Thirteen years ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a bilateral mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation, and reconstruction surgeries, I experienced serious bone density issues, and it wasn't long before I was diagnosed with full blown osteoporosis. I like to ski, and a bad fall could easily break bones and hips. My doctors wanted me to start taking drugs to increase my bone density. Hesitant to take them because of the bad side effects that were possible, I chose weight lifting. I took a few classes a week at a local gym, which didn't seem to make much of a difference. My bone density kept sliding down. Deciding I needed to up the ante, I chose to do an On Ramp class at Cross Fit Harbor Springs (Michigan) and was hooked! I loved participating, and felt comfortable to do what I could do. I didn't feel any pressure to perform, but rather to just grow in my own personal fitness. The instructors, Codey, Lynn Anne, and Charlotte were SO helpful and encouraging, as were the other athletes! The icing on the cake was my most recent bone density test. It stayed steady with my last year's results, instead of sliding further down! Woo Hoo! The goal now is to make it climb higher! Long story...but that's my reason for participating. I not super interested in the competition aspect, but rather just getting myself more fit, and being pushed a bit will be a good motivator.
