Week 1 comes to a close with more than 5 million burpees completed worldwide. In the North East Region, more than 10,500 athletes competed and the Leaderboard is on fire with both seasoned athletes and new names across all divisions to keep a keen eye on.

Individual Men

At the top of the heap, 16-year-old, Sam Gande (CrossFit SoNo) leads the pack with 141 burpees. Coming in at 5’5” and 132 pounds, Gande is built for this workout. It will be interesting to see how he measures up going forward with weighted lifts.

Mike McKenna (CrossFit 914) and Matt Simonton round out the top three men, both bringing in 139 burpees. McKenna placed 4th in the 2011 North East Regional. NFL veteran, Simonton, returns to the Open after scrutiny with his video uploads in 2011. Simonton placed 22nd in the Open competition last year, but didn’t compete in the Regional Competition.

Austin Malleolo (Reebok CrossFit One) completed 134 burpees to secure 10th place in Open Workout 12.1. Daniel “Boomsauce” Tyminski (CrossFit Lindy), 2nd in the Open competition in 2011, clocked 128 burpees to rank 36th in 12.1.

Individual Women

North East women brought the heat in seven minutes with Workout 12.1. First up, Rachel Martinez (O-Side CrossFit) cranked through 130 burpees securing first place for Week 1.

Former pro softball player and now Assistant Coach at Fordham University, Emily Friedman (CrossFit Dynamix) completed 127 burpees to secure a top spot in the Individual Women’s leaderboard.

New faces to the Games, Stacey DelPreore (CrossFit The Rack) and Tiffany Radaz (CrossFit City Line) tallied 125 reps each as Week 1 came to a close.  Jenny Davis and Alicia Gomes, last year’s North East Open’s top two contenders banged out a solid 120 each. Jennifer Hunter-Marshall finished 6th in the 2011 Open and 5th in the 2011 North East Regional competition is putting up her fight again this year with 116 burpees.

Stacey Kroon and Mel Ockerby, two top athletes in the 2011 Open, both broke the century mark in burpees but failed to make the top 100. These two definitely have a strategy and their scores are still good enough to keep them in the running.

Team

BKAthletics (CrossFit Performance) takes the top team spot for 12.1 followed closely by O-Side CrossFit. SCF 1 (Southshore CrossFit) rounds out the top three teams. Last year’s Affiliate Cup winners, CrossFit New England, posted 14th and 31st with their A and B teams.

Masters

Within three of the four Masters Divisions, the top athletes scored above the coveted 100-burpee mark. Amy Mendelbaum (CrossFit Performance) takes top honors in the Womens 45-49 Division with 128 burpees performed followed by Kevin Unger (CrossFit City Line) with 122 in the Men’s 45-49 Division.

Bubba Hagood (CrossFit New England), a 2011 favorite, followed closely with 111 burpees.

In the 50-54 Division, Steven Meis (CrossFit Noreaster) and Elaine Polito (CrossFit Bridgewater) took the top spots with 112 and 108 respectively.

The 55-59 Men and Women put up some serious numbers with Brian Ray (CrossFit Providence) having 109 and Judi Donnelly (CrossFit New England) having 104.

And finally, the 60-plus Division was led by Peter Nathan (Gunx CrossFit) at 94 reps. Marlene Garceau (CrossFit North Haven) sported an honorable 93 burpees. At 61 years old, Garceau is an inspiration to women in CrossFit worldwide.

More to come

As always — Week 1 creates a stir and the cream starts to rise to the top in the weeks to come — and we’re definitely seeing some game changers taking shape. This should be a very interesting five weeks.
