Get the in-depth analysis of Open Workout 25.1 from Jonathan Kinnick of btwb.

The first week of the 2025 CrossFit Open featured a triplet of lateral burpees over the dumbbell, dumbbell hang clean-to-overheads, and walking lunges. The format was as many rounds and reps as possible in 15 minutes, with the reps for the first two movements ascending by 3 each round.

This workout shared some similarities with Open Workout 24.1, but added a few interesting twists. For comparison, 24.1 was a descending-rep couplet with a 15-minute time cap. It featured a dumbbell snatch rather than dumbbell hang clean-to-overheads. New for 25.1 was the ability to switch arms as needed in the hang clean-to-overheads. We also saw a repeat of the burpee version that debuted in 24.1.

There were no high-skill movements or advanced loads in 25.1 which allowed for a high level of Rx’d participation. This meant placings on the leaderboard were determined primarily by the capacity of your engine and your willingness to go to a dark place.

Participation by Country

Below we take a look at the top 10 countries in the Open based on participation. The table shows each country’s share of the total Open participation, as well as how much that share has changed compared to the 2024 CrossFit Open.

The United States saw a 2.25% increase in their share, bringing it to nearly 42% of the field. France regained the No. 2 spot over the United Kingdom with an increase of 0.42%. Brazil dropped from fourth place in 2024 to sixth place in 2025. The Netherlands joined the top 10 for the first time, bumping Germany out of the 10th spot.

Each week of the Open we’ll compare the performances of these top 10 countries. Looking at top countries with the highest Rx’d participation rates, we see South Korea had the highest with 91%, followed by Australia with 88%, and the United Kingdom with 86%.

For 25.1, we are using the percentage of athletes with more than 232 reps (8 completed rounds) as a measure of competitiveness. Based on this metric, the most competitive top countries are South Korea with 20%, Spain with 15%, and Australia with 14%.

Workout Analysis by Division

In the 2025 Open, the majority of participants are in the masters divisions, with athletes over the age of 34 making up 57% of the field. Individuals aged 18 to 34 make up 41%, while teens aged 14-17 account for the remaining 2%.

Similar to what we saw in 24.1, a larger share of men aged 18-34 performed 25.1 as Rx’d compared to women of the same age, with 90% and 70% choosing the Rx’d version, respectively.

25.1 workout version by division

Given there were no big high-skill or high-load blockers in this workout, we see a nice smooth distribution of scores as expected. In the graph below, we split some of the popular rounds into two parts, to give a more granular view of the distribution. We can see the highest concentration of men finishing the workout in the first half of round 8. For women, the largest group finished in the second half of round 7.

At the top end of the distribution, we see that only 13% of individuals made it to round 9, and less than 1% made it to round 10.

Community Cup Tiers

The Community Cup is a new tier-based stage of competition that takes place in affiliates after the Open. Based on your overall level in the Open, you will be placed in one of five tiers (Pro, Advanced, Intermediate, Novice, and Rookie) and compete against other athletes in your tier. The table below will give you an idea of what tier your score on 25.1 would place you in.

See the Community Cup landing page for more details.

Percentiles by Division and Version

Below are percentile tables for individuals, masters, and teenagers with details for each version of the workout. You can see the breakdown of how many reps it took to achieve a particular percentile. For example, for Rx’d Women aged 35-39, a score of 233 reps got you into the 90th percentile.

These percentiles are comparing you against your division and workout version, which is different from your overall division percentile (compared against all versions combined).
