The 2021 CrossFit Open welcomes two new masters divisions.

On Wednesday, Feb. 17, CrossFit announced the creation of two new age divisions, the Men and Women 60-64 and Men and Women 65+ Divisions. For years, advanced masters athletes have requested the addition of these divisions, as athletes are now competitive well into their late 60s.

Like all the other masters age divisions, on average athletes find it increasingly difficult to remain competitive after their second year in a particular age division. Nevertheless, in some previous years, older 60-somethings were able to press on in the Age Group Online Qualifier (AGOQ). Below are the number of masters over the age of 65 who qualified for the 60+ AGOQ in the last three years after landing in the top 200 in the Open. In the parentheses the oldest qualifier age is listed.

New Masters Qualifiers

CrossFit defines health as one’s fitness across their lifetime, and these new masters divisions will add greater precision to the Sport of Fitness’ efforts to measure and assess athletes’ long-term health and fitness. Now competitive CrossFitters have a better chance of becoming Games athletes well into their late 60s.

As a result, the new age divisions may reinvigorate a number of masters for the upcoming season. Below is a list of notable and successful masters athletes who have been active over the last four Games seasons and are now eligible for the 65+ age divisions.
