This year’s newly minted Europe Regional brought the fittest athletes from Europe North and Europe Central to the Velodrom in Berlin, Germany, from May 18 to 20.
The Regionals are the second stage of the CrossFit Games competition season, and this series is your backstage pass.
On Day 2, the Icelandic athletes shine. The competition between Annie Thorisdottir and Sara Sigmundsdottir heats up with Event 3’s gymnastics challenges and Event 4’s brutal pairing of snatches and burpees.
Björgvin Karl Guðmundsson starts to rally, as well.
“I’ve been feeling like shit for the last 10 days,” Guðmundsson admits. But even after banking two top-five finishes on Day 2, he’s far from certain to take one of Europe’s five qualifying positions.
Kristin Holte of Norway also has an impressive Day 2 and admires the high level of athleticism among her fellow competitors.
“I think being in this region is the best thing that an athlete can do because you get pushed in every workout. You know … where the level is and how much you need to step up your game to be able to compete in Madison,” she says.
