2021 Quarterfinal: Toomey, Wells, Smith, Moorad, and Hoerner

From tackling tests, maximizing recovery, and fueling up on Sour Patch Kids, the PRVN athletes give us an inside look into their Quarterfinal weekend.

Tia-Clair Toomey, Brooke Wells, Alec Smith, Will Moorad, and Streat Hoerner were all smiles during the competition. Led by head coach Shane Orr, the crew took on two tests on Thursday, two tests on Friday, and one on Saturday.

Although some of the athletes were competing against each other, the genuine camaraderie and mutual support were noticeable. The athletes exchanged friendly banter, cheered each other on, and indulged in sweet treats together.

Four-time Fittest Woman on Earth Toomey says “it’s all fun” training with the other PRVN athletes and credits her 2021 Open win to the “awesome atmosphere.”

“Have you checked out my training crew? Look at them all,” Toomey says smiling.

Two-time Games athlete Hoerner says being able to train with the team is better, especially on tough days.

“You’ve got the rest of the crew when you come in … to lift you up and help you out,” Hoerner says. “It just makes shit easier.”

The athletes had impressive finishes during the competition.

Toomey took first place in four of the five tests on the women’s Oceania leaderboard and placed ninth in Test 3. She earned another overall competition win with her first-place finish.

Three-time Games athlete Smith was proud of hitting a 357-lb. 4-rep-max front squat in Test 4. Smith says, “I haven’t lifted that for a 1-rep for a long time, so I’m happy with that for 4.” He finished the competition in 58th place overall.

Two-time Games athlete Moorad and six-time Games athlete Wells had their best finishes in Test 1. Moorad finished in third place, and Wells took second place on their respective leaderboards. Moorad took 55th overall in the competition, and Wells finished in fifth.

Hoerner’s best finish was in Test 2 with a time of 14:55, good for seventh place on the men’s North America leaderboard. Hoerner narrowly missed qualifying for Semifinals by five spots.

“This season, I’ve really felt like I’ve been reborn, and I’m so excited for the year ahead,” Toomey says. “I can’t remember the last time that I had that feeling, and it’s so rewarding and so motivating to have that and be surrounded by such great people.”
