I began CrossFit in 2009 at my college gym. I followed mainsite programming and managed to get along with whatever equipment I could throw together. If I recall correctly, my first WOD was a supposedly breezy 400m walking lunge for time. The next day I could barely walk. I was hooked! A few years later I walked into my first box for what was a much-needed "supervised" WOD. Small things began to click: handstand push-ups, then (finally) double-unders, muscle-ups, and my olympic lifts. One particular moment stands out: during the snatch ladder in the 2012 Open I landed my first 135lb snatch with only 10 seconds left and the entire gym watching and cheering me on. The box erupted. That moment encapsulated everything I love about CrossFit and, if I could point to any one event, served as a genesis of sorts for my interest and growth as a coach. I didn't land that snatch on my own. I had a coach and a group of friends at the box that worked with me. A lot of small things done repetitiously had to come together in order for me to succeed just that one time. It required my motivation and someone else's dedication to coaching and seeing others succeed. That what drives me as a coach. I love seeing other people do well and improve. There's nothing like watching someone nail a muscle-up, get their first double-under, land their first box-jump, pull-up, or tell you that daily life is a lot easier now that functional movements aren't so hard. I'm still learning and growing, and helping others when I can. The community's success is my success.
