Overview of the Workouts

Workout 3

A 5-to-1 descending ladder of clean and jerks, with weight increasing from 185 lb to 275 lb for the men and 125 lb to 185 lb for the women, was the focus of Workout 3. Both male athletes started off the workout, and their female counterparts closed it out.

Time cap: 7 min.

Workout 4

The women started off Workout 4 with a descending rep sequence of synchro toes-to-bars, box jumps, and alternating dumbbell snatches, before finishing off with “you go, I go” rope climbs. Once the women finished the workout, the men completed the same movements.

Time cap: 30 min.

Overall Standings

  1. CrossFit Commit Okavango
  2. CrossFit Tijger Valley Unit
  3. BST CrossFit

Workout 3

  1. CrossFit Okavango — 6:35
  2. BST CrossFit — 9:43
  3. CrossFit Tijger Valley Unit — 59 reps

Workout 4

  1. CrossFit Okavango — 22:02
  2. BST CrossFit — 24:44
  3. CrossFit Tijger Valley Unit — 25:01

This weekend has been a battle between CrossFit Okavango, BST CrossFit, and CrossFit Tijger Valley Unit.

Okavango has continued a perfect score weekend, sweeping first place in all four workouts. The team has a very strong line-up, as two of the teammates, Johannes Jacobus Brits and Mariska Smit, were part of the 2021 Fittest in Cape Town winners, Eikestad Mighty Oaks. Additionally, Liz Burns was part of a 2018 Games Team. If Okavango can keep the momentum, they will be the only team to sweep all Quarterfinal workouts two years in a row.

Catching Okavango may be too difficult of a stretch for the other two teams. But with one workout to go, BST and Tijger Valley Unit are battling for second place, separated by merely one point.

  2. CrossFit YAS Black — 6:51
  3. MVMT CrossFit — 7:01

Workout 4

  1. KT CrossFit Kolesnikov Team — 20:36
  2. CrossFit YAS Black — 22:07
  3. CrossFit Alioth — 22:11

After placing third in Workouts 1 and 2, KT CrossFit Kolesnikov made a comeback, placing first in Workouts 3 and 4, which jumped them to second place overall on the leaderboard. Workout 4 for the team was no match for YAS Black, as Kolesnikov finished 90 seconds ahead.

Though YAS Black has been very consistent this weekend, placing second in most of the workouts, they were only separated by one point for the lead with Kolesnikov right on their tail. The members of YAS Black are ready to battle to keep first, as Michael Mikaere and Gemma Radar have strong Regional and Semifinals experience but have missed making it to the Games thus far. If they can pull off a first-place win in Workout 5, YAS Black could be one step closer to punching their ticket to the Games.

CrossFit Zurriola Training Culture had a slip in Workout 3, placing in 14th, but quickly got back in the game, placing third in Workout 4. The team is comprised of mentally tough individuals that know how to turn on the grit when it’s go-time. Nienke Van Overveld placed fourth at the 2021 Games on Team Surbiton. Alexander Anasagasti went to the 2019 Games as an individual and made it to Semifinals last year on Team CrossFit Zurriola Training Culture.

Team Mayhem Independence swept second place by one second in Workout 3, leaving Invictus in third.

Though there’s an 11-point spread between third and fourth place overall, CrossFit PSC is not giving up on trying to catch Invictus for the third-place spot. PSC placed third in Workout 4, beating out Move Fast Lift Heavy by four seconds.

Workout 4 was a fight to the finish, with EXF beating Urban Energy by one second. EXF is comprised of a younger (but very skilled) team surrounding Christee Bishop, who has Regional and Semifinal experience.

Three of the four members have returned to the team that qualified for the 2021 CrossFit Games. The fourth member, Gonzalo Duro, competed on Team CrossFit Villa Luro for the 2021 season, finishing third at the Brazil CrossFit Championship.

Sitting in second place is a team with fairly inexperienced members in the team division. Team BXP out of Brazil consists of members who only have Individual Quarterfinal experience from the last two years. The team soared up the leaderboard into second place after the close of Day 2. They will be a team to watch heading into Day 3.
