I married Kelly, my high school sweetheart, in 2006 and together we have 2 kids, Allie and Hank. Those 3 are my entire world. I have been crossfiting since 2009. It has truly changed my life forever. Getting in my workout, feeling the hurt, releasing and forgetting lifes worries for a few moments, and being around like minded friends are what have me coming back every day. I do it for fun. I do it to stay healthy (mentally and physically). I do it to feel good about myself. I do it to be around my friends. I do it for the mental clarity I get after a WOD. I do it for my family (we get along much better after a WOD :). I do it so that I can do all the other things I love to do. I also do it to test myself, because I love the immediate, hard evidence feedback the clock or bar gives me. I like teaching others what i've learned and watching them as they figure it all out for themselves. Sept of 2012 my family and I were broad sided as I was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 is typically acquired at younger ages but can creep up at any point in life. Its not clearly known what the causes are either. In a nut shell its an auto immune disease where the body attacks and kills the insulin producing cells of the pancreas, until they are completly gone. Without insulin, carbs (glucose) cannot find their way into the cells to produce energy. They just float around in the blood in toxic numbers causing damage to most everything in the body. There is no cure. The solution is self management through Glucos monitoring, insulin injections (daily and with some meals), diet (carb control), and exercise. For a few weeks this felt like a death sentence to me. But I soon realized that god had already given me the tools I needed to deal with and overcome the disease. My family, my friends, CrossFit and Paleo. Especially with the knowledge of the paleo diet and CrossFit I am able to better control my blood sugars and reduce my insulin intake immensely! I cant imagine how lost I would have been without these things already in my life. As a bonus from my much smarter eating and being better in tune with my body, every one of my PR's have improved, my body fat has decreased and I have an overall better feeling of mental wellbeing throughout the day.. Well.. Most days at least!
