In 2008 I was diagnosed with Lupus, which affected my joints, and made daily tasks difficult. I went from being a perfectly healthy college kid to needing assistance and doing pool therapy with senior citizens. After a couple of years, with help from my family and doctor's, we were able to manage my Lupus with medication.
In early 2011 I found CrossFit, and began doing workouts at a local affiliate. I enjoyed the workouts, but did not know much about competing or whether I would even be able to attempt to compete. WIth some coaxing from my coach, I started doing a little extra training in Decemeber of 2011 to help prepare me for the 2012 CrossFit Open.
As the 2012 Open started I performed well, and surprisingly made it into the Southeast Regional in 58th place. It just got real, and now I had a 70# dumbbell and 135# hang cleans to deal with! Regionals was my first competiton, and I enjoyed every bit of it. I even got my first muscle up during the final workout! I finished in 18th, and could not have been happier.
My love for CrossFit has blown into not only competing in local competitons, but also coaching ahtletes at the affiliate I go to. I enjoy teaching people new things, and love watching them achieve their goals. My coach has always said that watching me achieve my goals is the most rewarding part of his job, and now that I coach, I know exactly what he is talking about.
As this year has gone by my Lupus is still in check, and I have enjoyed the training I have put in. I believe that God has given me an opportunity with CrossFit, something no one with my condition should be able to do, and I am very blessed for that. CrossFit will always be apart of my life.
