CrossFit Games Athletes Undergo Drug Testing

The CrossFit Games Drug Policy is enforced year round, both in and out of competition.

As the world’s definitive test of fitness, CrossFit Games competitions stand not only as testaments to the athletes who compete but to the training methodologies they use. In this arena, a true and honest comparison of training practices and athletic capacity is impossible without a level playing field. Therefore, the use of banned performance-enhancing substances is prohibited under the requirements outlined in the official CrossFit Games Drug Testing Policy

The Drug Testing Policy aims to prevent the use of prohibited substances through rigorous testing. CrossFit uses a combination of directed and random in-competition and out-of-competition drug testing to deter athletes from using prohibited performance-enhancing substances and detect the use of these substances.

With the help of Doping Control Officers from Drug Free Sport International, the CrossFit Games team recently conducted its first series of out-of-competition tests for the 2021 season.

A range of athletes were tested, including four-time CrossFit Games champion Rich Froning, 2020 CrossFit Games fourth-place finishers Haley Adams and Noah Ohlsen, and 2020 CrossFit Games fifth-place finisher Brooke Wells.

The samples were collected in mid- to late January and analyzed at the UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory, which screened the samples for the full WADA out-of-competition testing panel of banned substances. All samples were negative.

The CrossFit Games team will continue to test athletes without notice over the course of the CrossFit season.

If an athlete is found in violation of the Drug Testing Policy, possible sanctions include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:

• Disqualification from the competition and loss of results
• Loss of results from previous competitions
• Forfeiture or required return of any prizes, awards, or money
• Suspension from participating in future CrossFit Games events (The length of this suspension will be determined by CrossFit on a case-by-case basis and may include a lifetime ban from all CrossFit Games events.)
• Public disclosure
