How I Train
I do the workout on the whiteboard, and I add in my own skill work if I have time and want to work on something. I program my own running/paddling/xc skiing/swimming. For 10 months out of the year, I squat a lot in pursuit of building up my kayaker legs. This goal still eludes me.
My Athletic Background
5-time US National Kayak Team member from 2004-2011. High school nordic ski racing. Marathon canoe racing.
My Experience With CrossFit
My kayak career was rife with nagging shoulder and back injuries. I started CrossFit in 2010 as an alternative strength and conditioning program leading up to the 2012 Olympic Trials. CrossFit was so fun that I put kayaking on the back burner, got my L1 and my USAW, started coaching, went to Regionals in 2013, and drank the kool aid for 2 years. It was delicious. Now I mostly just stick to coffee, and focus on having as much fun as possible exercising with my family, friends, and my dog.
My Work/Rest Schedule
While I love heaving barbells, they will never take the place of fresh air and sunshine. This year I'm spending less time in the gym and more time outside.
