Lesser-known teams are challenging the expected leaders.

The first week of the 2015 CrossFit Team Series has come to a close. With the leaderboard now packed with scores, it has become clear that this year’s competition won’t be easily ceded to a handful of super teams.

Lesser-known teams are challenging the Rogue- and Reebok-sponsored teams’ hold on the top of the leaderboard. Ben Smith’s younger brother, Alec, and the other athletes of Team Swagith Moondini (C. Wagner, C. Dardini, C. Mooney) were able to hold off Built By Bergeron (K. Davidsdottir, M. Letendre, C. Sager, M. Fraser) and Rogue Fitness Black (R. Froning, J. Bridges, S. Briggs, M. Alvarez) to claim the fourth spot on the overall leaderboard.

A team that didn’t register as a super team before the start of the competition, Midwest Exercisers (J. Long, D. Burk, M. Freeman, T. Williamson), follow right behind Rogue Fitness Black in seventh. Like Swagith Moondini, none of its athletes advanced beyond the regional level in 2015. (Read more: “Do Great Individuals Make Great Teams?”)

That said, five of the eight athletes who finished the 2014 CrossFit Team Series in first and second place, respectively, hold the same rank in 2015. Ben Smith, Stacie Tovar, and Emily Bridgers of Team Reebok East (2014, first) lead as Team Reebok Classics, and Dan Bailey and Camille Leblanc-Bazinet of Rogue Fitness Red (2015, second) are once again in second overall.
