Team U.S.A. Training

Catch Team U.S.A. in its first training workout with Games Director Dave Castro at Valley CrossFit in Van Nuys, Calif.

“Basically, what we have going on is the first-ever Team U.S.A. (versus) Team Europe competition and we’re really excited about it,” Castro says. “It’s going to be a neat event.”

The prep WOD, as suggested by 2009 Games champion Jason Khalipa, is done as a two-person team. For time, the pair must complete a total of 30 snatches at 165 lb. and a total of 30 bar muscle-ups, and then each member must row 500 meters.

This year’s second-place finisher, Matt Chan, is paired with Khalipa against members of Southern California’s top teams: CrossFit 760, CrossFit Invictus and CrossFit SoCal.

Chan and Khalipa finish the workout first in less than six minutes.

“We did good,” Khalipa says afterward, still gasping for air. “I’m happy.”

Team USA—also including Kristan CleverJulie FoucherRich Froning Jr. and Rebecca Voigt—will compete against Team Europe on Oct. 13 in London. The competition will involve four workouts.

Team Europe includes Tuomas Vaino, Mikko AronpaaSamantha BriggsKatrin DavidsdottirNumi Snaer Katrinarson and Annie Thorisdottir.
