The Europe Team for the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Invitational will be composed of four 2017 Meridian Regional athletes. The team will be coached by 2013 Games champion Samantha Briggs.
Two-time Games champion Annie Thorisdottir and two-time Games bronze medalist Sara Sigmundsdottir will represent Iceland on the women’s side, while fellow countryman and 2017 Games fifth-place finisher Björgvin Karl Guðmundsson will compete alongside South African 10th-place finisher Jason Smith for the men.
Smith is the only Invitational rookie on the Europe Team this year. After taking third at the 2017 Meridian Regional, Smith went on to notch eight top-10 finishes at the Games in Madison, Wisconsin.
No strangers to the Invitational, Thorisdottir, Sigmundsdottir and Guðmundsson have all represented Europe at the event in the past (Thorisdottir: 2012, 2014; Gudmundsson: 2014, 2015, 2016; Sigmundsdottir: 2015, 2016). Coach Briggs also has Invitational experience under her belt, having competed in 2012, 2013 (Team World) and 2014. In addition, Briggs coached the Europe Team in 2015 and 2016.
The Europe Team is hoping to hang on to the title of champion after its victory in Oshawa, Canada, last year.
