“There’s no better feeling than stepping out on the field and stunning them all by doing what none of them thought you could do.” - Ashlyn Harris I was born with a congenital birth defect that lead to a kidney transplant at age 26. Shortly after my transplant, I found Crossfit! My road through this discipline has been littered with highs and lows, new strengths and old weaknesses, finding and losing balance over and over. Chronic kidney disease has challenged me with peripheral neuropathy, motor imbalances, and mild cognitive impairment. Medications for my transplant have left me with essential tremors and some spasticity. An active lifestyle helps me combat some of these imbalances, and I have learned to adapt to face others. I also enjoy hiking, rock climbing, and yoga - having grown up in the mountains of the Adirondacks, I love the outdoors. In high school, I was a striker (soccer) and a sprinter. In September of 2020, my doctors discovered and diagnosed cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, essentially a rare form of stroke caused by a blood clot in the brain. I had been fainting, blacking out, and living through a decade of unending headaches with no known origin, when I wound up in the emergency room. My vision and hearing became impaired and I lost feeling in my arm up to my elbow (it has since returned but my right side strength and balance remains weak). The clot is still present and I also suffer from a secondary condition called intracranial hypertension. This year, I will be competing in my third Open (second as an adaptive athlete) and am excited to represent the neuromuscular division. Cheers to inclusion!
