I have always kept reasonably fit, but have being doing CrossFit for the past 7 years, 2-3 times a week, and enjoy the challenge (but not the injuries). I do Pilates to try to protect my back (but I still hurt it), and cycle because it's impact-free (except when I fell off and cracked my pelvis).
