March 25, 2013

This week, men, women and teams grabbed their medicine balls and went to work and submitted impressive scores on Regional and worldwide levels.

Competitors in the South Central are stretching out their sore quads today as they recover from the repeat workout that no one wanted to see again — 12.4. This week’s 12-minute AMRAP consisted of 150 wall balls, 90 double-unders and 30 muscle-ups.

According to a preliminary report from CrossFit, approximately 80 percent of those athletes who submitted scores for both 12.4 and 13.3 improved over last year. Competitors in the South Central were among those looking for an upgraded performance from 2012 — and they didn’t disappoint.

This week, men, women and teams grabbed their medicine balls and went to work and submitted impressive scores on Regional and worldwide levels.

MEN

For the men this week, Jaime Acuna, of Ranger CrossFit, came out of nowhere to pull out this week’s top performance. He finished with 300 total reps, which included finishing round one at 10:56 and completing an additional 30 wall balls. The performance was a standout for Acuna who finished in 206th and 138th place on 13.1 and 13.2, and it continued this year’s trend of no single male dominating the competition week to week.

Overall, though, it was this year’s model of consistency, Courtney Wuistinger, who rose to the top of the Leaderboard. In the previous two weeks, he has finished in third and fourth place while others have fluctuated dramatically. This week’s sixth-place finish was just the right touch to bump him into first overall, while familiar faces Jason Hoggan and Drew Bignall are found just behind him in second and third.

WOMEN

On the women’s side of the competition, one name continues to dominate the South Central: Jenn Jones.

With a staggeringly low four points after three workouts, Jones not only has a 21-point lead on the second place female, Amanda Schwartz, but her performances have also boosted her into ninth place worldwide. Jones completed 264 reps of 13.3, which was the top women’s score in the region, and 18th highest score worldwide.

Rounding out the top three women is 2010 and 2012 Games competitor, Candice Ruiz.

TEAM

For the third straight week, Get Lifted out of El Paso, Texas, retained first place among the South Central teams. Of the team’s current competitors, four are currently seeded high enough to qualify for Regionals as Individuals — a sound testament to the team’s athleticism.

Just behind Get Lifted, Woodward CrossFit RWB and Team CrossFit Central remain in second and third place, making this group’s control of the top of the Leaderboard three weeks strong.
