With week five in the books, the numbers are set and the Leaderboard’s top 48 men and women, as well as top 30 teams will be headed to San Antonio, Texas for the 2013 South Central Regional.

For the final stage of the competition, everyone’s favorite girl made her third appearance in the Open — Fran. This time, the twist on the classic workout was an inventive time bonus feature. While the workout began with a four-minute AMRAP of 15 thrusters and 15 chest-to-bar pull-ups, 13.5 tested the will of the region’s best athlete by “awarding” those who completed at least three rounds, or 90 reps, within those four minutes, with an additional four minutes on the clock to see how far they could go. For each four minutes added, if the athletes were able to meet the minimum rep requirement, their AMRAP instantly increased until they could no longer maintain their pace.

Overall, only 7 percent of individual men and only about 2 percent of women made it past the initial four-minute mark, proving this work out to be the ultimate in separating the cream from the crop.

Men

Of the South Central men, the most impressive performance on 13.5 came from Blaine Springston of CrossFit CenTex. Springston finished five full rounds with an additional 15 thrusters and four chest-to-bar pull-ups for a total of 169 reps. His impressive performance throughout the Open placed Springston in 26th place within the South Central Region, meaning you’ll see you him in San Antonio.

Among the others to watch out for at the Regional are the Open’s top three performers:  Courtney Wuistinger, Roy Gamboa and Jason Hoggan.

Women

For the women of the South Central, Janet Black of Atomic CrossFit reported the region’s high score with 169 reps — the same score as top 13.5 male, Springston. Black finished the Open season within striking distance of the top three, in fifth-place overall.

Going into Regionals, the South Central’s top contenders for CrossFit Games qualification include dominating force Jenn Jones, consistent performer Amanda Schwartz, and Holly Mata from powerhouse team Get Lifted CrossFit.

Team

There was no surprise here as Get Lifted finishes off the week and the Open as the top team in the region. Of the team’s competitors, Holly Mata finished third, Brenda Chavez finished sixth, Tammy McDonald finished 30th, Fernanda Magana is in 43rd and Paul Smith finished the Open in 21st. With so many individual qualifiers, it will be interesting to see who Get Lifted sends to the team competition and which teammates opt to go solo.

Rounding out the region’s top three teams are Team CrossFit Central and CrossFit Deep. Team CrossFit .380, which finished in first place on 13.5, finished in 16th place overall and will also be seen at the Regional competition.
