There was a lot of hope in the hearts of many athletes and coaches at this year’s Latin America Regional. Who would represent the women in Carson, Calif.?

More than 140 women competed in the Open in Latin America this year. Of those, 20 registered and competed at Regionals in Cali, Colombia. That’s 16 more than in 2011. With so many more competitors, many wondered if 2011 Fittest Woman in Latin America, Tarasa Barnett, could hold onto her title. She showed she was more prepared and skilled than 19 other women in the region.

Barnett, well-known as a tough contender in the region, handily won five of six events at Regionals. The only event she didn’t win was Diane, where she came in second. Reminiscent to her performance in 2011, Barnett had to complete the final three events by herself, as the other athletes were not able to complete the required amount of work.

Regional Recap

To the amazement of the spectators, 7 out of the 20 women competing at Regionals did not finish the minimum amount of work required in Diane – including favorite from Brazil Anita Pravatti – and after Event 1, it was Barnett against just 13 others. When the night took over Day 1, Barnett comfortably completed the row, pistols and heavy cleans with almost a minute to spare. After Event 2, nine more women were not able to finish the required amount of work and the competition was down to four. It was déjà vu all over the place.

On Day 2, the women geared up for the dumbbell snatch/sprint workout. Barnett did not finish Event 3 under the time cap, but did well enough move onto Event 4 and take another first place. The other three women still in contention up to that point, however, could not prove their fitness beyond the minimum requirement of Event 3 and once again it was Barnett against herself. All she needed to do was finish the required amount of work for the final three workouts.

The question many were asking was weather or not Barnett would simply complete the minimum requirement of work or do the workouts in full. After a conversation with her coach, CJ Martin of SoCal’s CrossFit Invictus, she chose to complete the workouts the best she could. So Tarasa set out to show everybody she belonged amongst the top competitors.

Event 4 was an opportunity for Barnett to display her engine. She worked her way through 22 minutes of squats, pull-ups and shoulder-to-overheads and finished with a time of 23:11. On Day 3, she snatched 125 pounds on the Snatch Ladder and chipped away at Event 6, managing enough work to qualify for the CrossFit Games for the second time as an individual.

Going to the Games

So, once again, Latin America’s 28-year-old, former volleyball player from CrossFit Cayman will represent Latin America at the 2012 Reebok CrossFit Games.

With just a few weeks until the Games, the whole region is anxiously awaiting Barnett’s performance to see how she stacks up against the constantly improving pool of female athletes at the Games. Barnett shows each year she’s a tough competitor and wants to win.

Camino a Los Games
