With 10 rounds and 22 double-unders on 14.1, Sam Briggs beat everyone in the 2011 and 2014 Open.

The Fittest Woman on Earth Samantha Briggs and three-time CrossFit Games competitor Dan Bailey sent the CrossFit world a clear message, notching the top scores for Open Workout 14.1 and taking home the first of the Open’s five weekly cash prizes.

Both athletes will receive US$2,014 and narrow their focus on the next challenge, which will be announced Thursday, March 6. Some $16,000 remains in the coffers for the winners of the four remaining Open workouts.

The 10-minute AMRAP of 30 double-unders and 15 power snatches known as Open Workout 14.1 is actually a retest of the first-ever Open workout from 2011 (11.1).

In 2011, about 26,000 people signed up for the Open and tried their best on the lung-burning couplet. Rich Froning turned in the top male performance with 448 reps (9 rounds, plus 30 double-unders and 13 snatches), and Annie Thorisdottir turned in the top female performance with 405 reps (9 rounds even).

Between 2011 and 2014, Open participation grew eight-fold. This year, 204,000 competitors spent 10 minutes fighting through double-unders and power snatches. After Garret Fisher and Marcus Hendren failed to come close to Rich Froning’s near 10-round performance from 2011, some questioned whether the old records would fall.

But only a few hours later, the records came tumbling down when Sam Briggs posted a video of herself completing 10 full rounds plus 22 double-unders within the time cap (472 reps). Briggs beat the female and male records from 2011, and every man and woman in the 2014 Open.

Two days later, Rich Froning’s former training partner Dan Bailey posted his score of 10 full rounds plus 11 double-unders (461 reps) and locked down the top spot on the men’s worldwide Leaderboard.

Rich Froning finished four reps shy of his 2011 worldwide winning performance with 444 reps (9 rounds, plus 30 double-unders and 9 snatches). Three men finished ahead of the three-time CrossFit Games champion, leaving Froning in fourth place worldwide on 14.1.

After spending the 2013 Reebok CrossFit Games season in recovery from a back injury, Annie Thorisdottir has returned to the competition. This week, she passed her 2011 worldwide winning performance by two reps (9 rounds, plus 2 double-unders for 407 reps total). Her improved performance was good enough for 20th worldwide in 2014.

Before Sam Briggs posted her score on 14.1, no man or woman had ever completed 10 rounds of 30 double-unders and 15 power snatches in 10 minutes. By the time score submissions for 14.1 closed, three men had joined her in the “10 Rounds Club.” Sam Briggs (472 reps), Dan Bailey (461 reps), Craig Kenney (450 reps), and Drew Shamblin (450 reps) are the world’s only members.

Keep in mind that affiliate managers have until Wednesday, March 5 at 5 p.m. PT to validate scores for 14.1, so the Leaderboards will be in flux. Athletes’ rankings are unofficial until that time.

The next Open workout will be announced from I AM CrossFit in Miami, Fla. Minutes after 14.2 is announced, Camille Leblanc-Bazinet and Talayna Fortunato will go head to head in the Sunshine State Showdown. Tune in to the live stream on Games.CrossFit.com this Thursday, March 6 at 5 p.m. PT.
