Betsy Finley took first place in the 60-and-over age group.

Going into the workout, Finley had said she was going to kick butt on the workout. That’s exactly what she did, finishing with a time of 13:25.

Afterward, the 62-year-old did a happy dance.

In the 55-to-59 age group, Diana Davidson won her heat at 11:07.

She took an early lead and kept it, staying just ahead of her competition as she moved on to the next movement.

Elaine Polito took her heat with a time of 10:07 in the 50-to-54 age group.

She had competition, though, as Mary Beth Litsheim was on her heels only behind by a few reps. Litsheim’s performance in the Open was good enough to qualify for a spot at the South West Regional. Litsheim didn’t make it to the final day of the Regional.

The final heat of the day — the 45-to-49 age group — was decidedly sealed by Lisa Mikkelsen, who was on CrossFit New England’s 2011 Affiliate Cup-winning team.

Although Mikkelsen seem slow to start when compared with her competitors, she kept her pace and looked calm and methodical.

“It’s a longer workout, so you can’t sprint it or you’re going to kill yourself,” she said.

The box jumps and kettlebell swings are where you can separate yourself, Mikkelsen added.

Her goal, she said, was to remain calm.

It worked as she finished first with a time of 8:35.

Cindy Briggs followed at 9:49.

The plan, said coach Brendan Marolda, was to get through the first half of the workout with as many unbroken reps as possible.

“Slow and steady and try to pick up the pace,” said Marolda, who finished 13th at the North East Regional. “She did awesome. She couldn’t have done any betters. She’s pumped with that.”

Men Masters were tackling the chipper as of press time.
