Fittest in the Region: 2024 Individual Quarterfinal Recap

May 1, 2024

Kelley Laxton

Take a look at who will be moving on to the Semifinals and highlights from the 2024 Individual Quarterfinal.

More athletes than ever before were invited to compete in the 2024 Individual Quarterfinal, allowing the top 25% of athletes from each region to experience the second stage of the CrossFit Games season.

For some, this was just a fun taste of advanced virtual competition. For others, this was a chance to earn a ticket to the live Semifinals — the final qualifying stage for the CrossFit Games.

Athletes had six days to complete four challenging workouts, and by the end of the competition, only 40 men and 40 women from each region received an invitation to the 2024 Semifinals.

Take a look at who will be moving on to the next round and highlights from the 2024 Individual Quarterfinal.

Highlights

Men

Asia’s first-place male Ivan Kukartsev is headed to his first Individual Semifinal after winning his region by over 20 points. Kukartsev has been to the 2022 Semifinals and CrossFit Games on Kolesnikov Team, but he has been vying for a ticket to the Games as an individual since last year. He missed out on the 2023 Semifinals largely due to a major penalty on his V-ups in Workout 4.

“I did my workout and prayed that there would never be another v-ups in the quarter finals. It was for this exercise that I received a major penalty last year and did not go to the 1/2 finals. Okay, just kidding, I trained v ups for a year, so I’m not afraid of them. And most importantly, I feel strength in my hands, which means I’m ready,” Kukartsev wrote in an Instagram post before Quarterfinals.

Women

On the women’s side, Seher Kaya tops the Asia leaderboard for the first time in her career. Winning the first two workouts, Kaya now has a total of seven career regional workout wins, tying Brazil’s Guilherme Malheiros for second-most of all time.

Europe

Highlights

Men

Jonne Koski appears to be having a late-career renaissance,” said CrossFit Games Lead of Sport Statistics Chad Schroeder.

The 29-year-old is sweeping the 2024 season, banking both worldwide wins in the first two stages. Koski is the first male athlete to pull off this double win and is the oldest man to win the Open.

The Đukić brothers will be returning to the Europe Semifinal stage again, but this year, Luka Đukić finished the Individual Quarterfinal 15 spots ahead of 2023 Europe Semifinal winner Lazar Đukić. Luka was sidelined at the 2023 Europe after catching the flu, so he will be seeking redemption and a chance to join his brother at the CrossFit Games this year.

Women

Topping the women’s Europe leaderboard is Poland’s Gabriela Migała, winning the region by 17 points over 2023 Fittest Woman on Earth Laura Horvath. Migała took two workout wins in the Europe region (Workouts 1 and 4), increasing her career total to three regional wins. This ties her for fifth most of all women.

Although Iceland favorites Annie Thorisdottir and Katrin Davidsdottir are out for the season, Sara Sigmundsdottir is still in the running for a ticket to the CrossFit Games, and it is a long-time coming. The last CrossFit Games she qualified for was in 2020. The 31-year-old will be invited to the Europe Semifinal to have another shot at qualifying for her seventh CrossFit Games after a 27th-place finish at Quarterfinals.

Oceania

Highlights

Men

In 2022, Ricky Garard returned to CrossFit competition for the first time after a four-year suspension. His redemption year was looking bright. Garard took third place at the 2022 CrossFit Games, looking to take the title of Fittest on Earth in 2023. But his season came to a sudden halt after a mountain bike accident left him with a shoulder injury just weeks before the Oceania Semifinal.

So in 2024, Garard is living another redemption year. Garard tied Jay Crouch for first place in Oceania, adding a third region Quarterfinals win to his record. He is now tied with Tia-Clair Toomey for most of all time.

Crouch will join his brother, Toby Crouch, on the same competition floor at the Oceania Semifinal. This will be the second time the duo has competed at the Torian Pro together, but Toby will be vying for his first ticket to the CrossFit Games in hopes of joining his brother at the finals.

Women

Second-place finisher Grace Walton not only finished the 2024 Individual Quarterfinal with her highest career placement in Oceania (her previous best was 19th), but she was one of four non-Games athletes to finish within the top 25 worldwide. This could be her CrossFit Games rookie year.

North America West

Highlights

Men

Sitting on top of the men’s leaderboard is two-time Fittest Man on Earth Justin Medeiros, banking his third Quarterfinal regional win in a row. Medeiros will be looking to continue this streak in Carson, California, come May.

Another notable man to watch out for is 37-year-old Sam Dancer, who announced at the close of the 2023 CrossFit Games that he is retiring from the age-group division … to return to the individual division. Dancer finished the 2024 Individual Quarterfinal in 15th place in the North America West region and will compete at the first Individual Semifinal of his career.

Women

Olivia Kerstetter — well-known for her incredible performance in the individual women’s division during the 2023 season at the young age of 17 — isn’t backing down now that she has officially graduated from the teenage division. Kerstetter won two worldwide Quarterfinal workouts (Workouts 1 and 4), tying Medeiros for third of all-time.

Another recent teenage graduate is 18-year-old Trista Smith, who also competed as a teenager and as an individual during the 2023 season. But unlike Kerstetter, Smith chose to decline her invitation to the CrossFit Games as an individual and ride out her final year, taking second place in the Girls 16-17 division.

Africa

Highlights

Men

For the second year in a row, South Africa’s Kealan Henry tops the men’s Quarterfinal leaderboard in Africa. Henry was the only athlete during the 2024 Quarterfinals to win three workouts in his region. He now has 10 career regional Quarterfinal workout wins, the most of any athlete.

Sitting just 7points behind Henry is 35-year-old Ruan Duvenage. Although Duvange has never been to the CrossFit Games, he narrowly missed a ticket to the 2021 Games, taking second place at the Africa Semifinal that year. It will be a close race to the Games at the 2024 Africa Semifinal by Renegade Games.

Women

Sitting first on the women’s Africa leaderboard is Christina Livaditakis, also taking her second-straight Quarterfinals win in Africa. Livaditakis came close to a CrossFit Games qualification in 2022 with asecond-place finish at the CrossFit Fittest in Cape Town Semifinal, so she will be vying for her first CrossFit Games appearance at the 2024 Africa Semifinal.

South America

Highlights

Men

Agustin Richelme has truly swept every stage of the 2024 season in South America. He took first place in the Open, first place with team AR-1 CrossFit Mayhem Unity at the Team Quarterfinal, and now tops the leaderboard at the close of the Individual Quarterfinal. Richelme even took a world record for Workout 3, finishing in a time of 6:39.

For the next stage, he will need to choose which division he wants to pursue for the rest of the season, team or individual, which may open a backfill spot. Either way, his performance this season has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Women

Topping the women’s South America leaderboard is Victoria Campos, banking her second-straight Quarterfinals win in the region. Campos first appeared at the CrossFit Games in 2022 and appeared again in 2023 after taking first at the South America Semifinal both years. She will be looking for her third-straight Semifinal win and ticket to the Games at the Copa Sur.

North America East

Highlights

Men

The Fittest Man on Earth is continuing to show is athletic dominance. Jeffrey Adler took first in the North America East region and second worldwide, just behind Jonne Koski. Adler won two workouts in his region, Workouts 2 and 4.

Sitting right below Adler on the North America East leaderboard and in fourth place on the worldwide leaderboard is the third-Fittest Man on Earth Roman Khrennikov. Adler and Khrennikov were neck-and-neck during the 2023 CrossFit Games, and it would be safe to assume the duo will put on a similar show at the North America East Seminal by Syndicate Crown.

Women

Although Alexis Raptis took first on the North America East leaderboard, Canadian Emma Lawson took first worldwide at the 2024 Individual Quartefinal, finishing with a total of 44 points.

Haley Adams has returned to competition this season after taking a year break, but she isn’t missing a beat. Adams finished in fifth place on the North America East leaderboard. Now can she take another first-place finish at the Syndicate Crown Semifinal?
