Soon, hundreds of thousands of people will gather in their affiliates or at home to throw down in three workouts across three weeks in the largest participatory fitness competition in history: the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games Open.
A wide variety of people across the globe do the Open, gathering together to enjoy the magic of CrossFit as one community.
But everyone is on a different journey. You may be competitive, anxious, doing the Open for the first time, or even starting your comeback. Whether you registered early and are already preparing, or you’re on the fence, we’ve put together a few examples of different types of people who join the Open. Find your persona and read on for personalized tips to help enhance your Open experience.
Competitive Casey
Competitive Casey thrives off of competition. They sign up for the Open to fuel their competitive fire and will likely redo the workouts before the deadline so they can beat their friend’s score.
Are you a Competitive Casey? Here are some tips:
- You won’t want to miss out on any points. Make sure you submit your score every week by Mondays at 5 p.m. PT.
- Take a look at the equipment list and make sure you have access to all of the equipment.
- Read the 2023 Rulebook and familiarize yourself with the Open rules.
- Create a custom leaderboard and add all of your friends to see your rankings each week.
First-Time Frankie
First-Time Frankie will be participating in their first Open. Although they may be a bit nervous, they’re excited for this adventure and can’t wait to join in on the fun.
Are you a First-Time Frankie? Here are some tips:
- Read “Register Early For the Open” to familiarize yourself with the registration process.
- Check out the Open resources page for more information on the Open.
- Find your nearest CrossFit affiliate to complete the workouts. Trust us, the Open is better in numbers!
- Share the “I’m in For the Open” graphic on social media to celebrate this new experience.
Badass Betty
Badass Betty is always challenging themself to become a better athlete. They log all of their workouts and strive to improve their scores to see just how fit they have become. The Open is their time to set a baseline for the new year.
Are you a Badass Betty? Here are some tips:
- Download the Open Worksheet and write down your goals for this year.
- Take the 2023 Judges Course to familiarize yourself with movement standards.
- Refer back to your CrossFit Games athlete profile to view your scores and rankings from previous Opens.
Anxious Alex
Anxious Alex usually has reservations about doing the Open because they feel like they aren’t fit enough to participate. Not knowing the workouts ahead of time might make them nervous, although it’s truly nothing they haven’t done before. They hate 1-rep-maxes and benchmark workouts because they always put too much pressure on themselves to perform. They need to be reminded that the Open is just another workout.
Are you an Anxious Alex? Here are some tips:
- Take a look at some examples of workout variations from last year’s Open. There is a workout variation to work with any fitness level.
- Participate in the Open workouts with your local affiliate. This is your chance to just have fun with your community.
- If your gym runs heats, go first. Don't watch everyone do the workout, which will only make you more anxious.
- Don’t change up your routine. Treat this as just another WOD.
Wouldn’t-Miss-It Millie
Wouldn’t-Miss-It Millie has signed up for every Open since its inception. This is their favorite time of year and they can’t wait for the first workout to be released. They do the Open just for fun and look forward to bonding with their community every year.

- Help plan Open-related activities at your affiliate.
- Share your expertise with other members at your gym and get them excited for the Open!
- Take the 2023 Judges Course so you can judge your friends.
- Share how many Opens you have participated in and what you’re most excited about on social media.
Comeback Cameron
Comeback Cameron isn’t as fit as they were last year, but that won’t stop them from particpating in the Open again. They will scale the workouts as needed and are not worried about beating their scores from last year. Comeback Cameron doesn’t quit when they hit a roadblock in their fitness.

- Talk to your coach to make a plan that’s right for you and fill out the Open Worksheet with your goals for this year’s Open.
- Take the 2023 Judges Course to familiarize yourself with the movements that might appear in the Open.
