The 2023 CrossFit Games Team Quarterfinal Recap

April 14, 2023

Kelley Laxton

Take a look back at the best moments and top scores from the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games Team Quarterfinal.

The teams were the second group to take on the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games Quarterfinals. For two days, from March 29-31, the top teams from the Open took on four tests to determine who would advance to the live Semifinals.

The Team Quarterfinal was the first time athletes would compete together on the competition floor. In teams of four — two men and two women — athletes were tested in a series of movements that required synchronization, "I go, you go" partner trade-offs, and strict communication.

At the close of the competition, the top 40 teams from North America East, North America West, and Europe, and the top 20 teams from Africa, Asia, Oceania, and South America qualified for the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games Semifinals. They will be invited to compete live in their respective regions for a chance to earn a spot at the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games.

Take a look at the teams advancing from each region, the top scores, and the best moments from the Team Quarterfinal.

PRVN Fitness — led by six–time Fittest Woman on Earth Tia-Clair Toomey and coach Shane Orr — curated their first-ever team for the 2023 season, consisting of some of the most accomplished individual and team athletes in the world.

Team CrossFit East Nashville PRVN added to the roster: Tola Morakinyo, a four-time CrossFit Games athlete who was well known for his debut on Iceland Annie’s 2022 super team, CrossFit Reykjavík, and Tim Paulson, a six-time individual Games athlete. Taylor Williamson and Adrea Nisler — both members of six-time Fittest Affiliate on Earth CrossFit Mayhem Freedom — round out the team.

Standing in as the two alternates are Toomey and Saxon Panchik. Although Toomey is pregnant with her first child, she will be ready to step in if needed.

"As long as I am not still pregnant by the time the Games comes around," Toomey joked

The PRVN team took first worldwide in Tests 1, 2, and 3A, only dropping as low as 10th worldwide in the final test. The team stands atop the worldwide and North America East leaderboards.

Although Rich Froning has stepped back from team competition, the name "Mayhem" still populates the leaderboard. The affiliate now has roots planted all around the world, taking the top spots in several regions, from North America to Africa to Oceania.

Sitting in second on the North America East leaderboard is CrossFit Mayhem Independence, one of the three teams Mayhem sent to the Games last year. The team won the 2022 Mid-Atlantic CrossFit Challenge and took fifth at the 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games. This year, the team consists of former Games teen athlete and 2022 CrossFit Mayhem Independence team member Angelo DiCicco, plus a few new faces: individual Semifinal athletes Sam DeMeester and Kyra Milligan as well as Zoe Jones, a former member of 8th Day CrossFit Black Zoe.

Three of four CrossFit Invictus teams qualified for the 2023 North America West Semifinal, and all sit in the top six in the region. 2022's third-fittest affiliate on Earth, team CrossFit Invictus, has established its dominance, taking first in Tests 1, 2, 3A, and 4, and second in Test 3B, securing the gold. Taking home third is CrossFit Invictus Unconquerable, and in sixth is CrossFit Invictus Sea of Green.

Sitting in second on the North America West leaderboard is CrossFit Franco's Misfits, a team featuring three-time Games athlete Brandon Luckett, who had announced his retirement from competitive CrossFit back in 2021. However, he decided to come out of retirement early to take a stab at team competition. He hinted at his return at the end of 2022 in multiple Instagram posts that all had the cryptic caption: "Do it for the team."

Rounding out the team of four is four-time Games athlete Logan Collins, four-time Games athlete and former member of team CrossFit Mayhem Independence Alexis Johnson, and two-time Fittest Law Enforcement Officer on Earth Shaylin Laure.

Two-time Games athlete Andre Houdet has been competing as an individual for nine years and felt he needed a new challenge. So, he gathered three of his friends and pitched the idea of creating a team for the 2023 season.

"We might not have the opportunity again because it is complicated to find people that you know and trust, that are willing to make the same commitments as you," Houdet said

Joining Houdet on team No Shortcuts CrossFit out of Denmark are three former competitive athletes with spectacular CrossFit resumes.

Julian Kragh-Maschvitsz has a background in football and track and field, picking up CrossFit 11 years ago. He has been to the Games twice with team CrossFit Butcher's Lab. Julie Hougård Nielsen was a competitive swimmer before CrossFit and credited her discipline and determination in competitive CrossFit to those years of swimming. Nielsen is a two-time Semifinal athlete in the individual division. The final member of the team is Nienke van Overveld, a former competitive gymnast who says the body awareness she learned in gymnastics helped her pick up new skills quickly in CrossFit. She has competed at the CrossFit Games four times, representing three different teams.

During the 2023 Team Quarterfinal, team No Shortcuts CrossFit finished three tests in first on the Europe leaderboard — Tests 2, 3A, and 3B — and never dropped below the top five in the other two.

CrossFit Oslo — one of the first CrossFit affiliates in Norway — has qualified six teams to the Europe Semifinal out of the Team Quarterfinal: CrossFit Oslo Navy Blue (second place), CrossFit Oslo Blackout (16th place), CrossFit Oslo NAJS (19th place), CrossFit Oslo Vamos (24th place), CrossFit Oslo RBLS (32nd place), and CrossFit Oslo Pink Panthers (tied for 36th place).

Taking home bronze in Europe is two-time second-fittest affiliate on Earth CrossFit Oslo Navy Blue, looking to take home another Semifinal win in Berlin come June.

Team CrossFit FBDV Mayhem Africa finished three tests in first place, never dropping below fifth in the other two.

Taking the final Africa Semifinal invite is team RTF CrossFit Krugersdorp Reapers from Krugersdorp, South Africa. The roster includes Barend Bogdanovic, Ocean Oosthuizen, Bianca Bogdanovic, and Zihan Coetzee. Oosthuizen has been to Semifinals twice on team RTF CrossFit, but the other three members will attend their first Semifinal this year if the team chooses to accept its invitation.

The Mayhem name reps the top of the leaderboard once again in South America, with team Sense Fitness CrossFit Mayhem Soul taking first place.

Vittoria CrossFit has advanced two of its teams to the South America Semifinal out of the Team Quarterfinal, Vittoria CrossFit MoreReps 2023 and Vittoria CrossFit Team Hungry.

Vittoria CrossFit MoreReps has advanced to the South America Semifinal three years in a row, taking sixth place at the 2022 CrossFit Copa Sur. At the end of the Team Quarterfinal, the team sits in fourth place on the South America leaderboard with a top finish of second in Test 2. The second Vittoria CrossFit team to qualify for Semifinals is Vittoria CrossFit Team Hungry, placing 11th. Only one member has advanced past the Quarterfinals, so this will be the first Semifinal competition for most of the team.
