Behind the Scenes: Day 2 Part 1

Get a look at the media room and then move on to in-the-moment interviews with CrossFit decision-makers and athletes at this year’s CrossFit Games in this installment of Sevan Matossian’s Behind the Scenes series.

The first unknown and unknowable challenge of Friday’s competition happens when the broad jump moves indoors. But CrossFit legend Chris Spealler doesn’t think too much of it.

“It’s just the nature of the beast,” he says. “You kind of gotta go with the flow around here.”

Just after an athlete briefing, Camille Leblanc-Bazinet is told to foam roll by coach and fiancé Dave Lipson. The directive is met with stink eye.

“She hates me and loves me at the same time right now,” says the ever-comedic Lipson. “It’s a stressful time for us both.”

Perhaps the most profound words come from 2008 Games champion Jason Khalipa.

“It’s all about ‘be positive’ and ‘be present.’ Nothing’s guaranteed in life. Who knows if you’ll ever come back to the CrossFit Games,” he says while in an ice bath. “It’s about enjoying the experiencing. If you’re not, it’s gonna mess you up.”

Also included is footage from athlete briefings and a look at how the judging and volunteer crews set up the events.
