What’s Rich Froning doing?

Well, if it’s less than three hours before the live announcement of Open Workout 14.5, he’s repeatedly deadlifting 465 lb. at a San Francisco hotel.

Catch all the behind-the-scenes action with the fifth and final installment of Backstage Pass.

You’ll meet a fan from Australia who has only been doing CrossFit for four months but got on a plane to see five past Games champions compete head-to-head in California.

“The only event that I get to see in Australia is the Regionals, so I never get to see the American athletes, and I’m very fond of them,” explains Narayanan Krishnan.

He adds with a laugh: “I spent almost $2,000 for the (plane) ticket and $20 for this one.”

Also in line is Alessandra Pichelli, who placed fourth at last year’s CrossFit Games and was a featured athlete when Workout 14.3 was announced in New Orleans, La., on March 13.

Meanwhile, countless fans take photos with Games host Rory McKernan. It’s odd, McKernan says, given that he himself felt like a groupie the first time he helped instruct a CrossFit Level 1 Certificate Course years ago.

“(Adrian Bozman) was my … CrossFit celebrity. And Greg Amundson. The first time that I worked a seminar and Greg Amundson was there, I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s Greg Amundson.’”

In the duel for Garrett Fisher’s leather jacket, it was Rory McKernan who lost and Dave Castro who won. And thus CrossFit Inc.’s Director of the Games and Director of Training donned the debonair jacket for the live announcement of Open Workout 14.1 at CrossFit North Atlanta. Castro’s win relegated McKernan to the mall for shopping under pressure.

In the days leading up to the announcement of Open Workout 14.2, Dave Castro reveals a hint. “It’s not fun and friendly anymore,” he says from I AM CrossFit outside Miami, Fla., where Talayna Fortunato and Camille Leblanc-Bazinet are the feature athletes for the announcement event.

The saying goes that New Orleanians love Jesus, Sean Payton and Drew Brees. And during football season, not necessarily in that order. On March 13, the Crescent City showed it also loved CrossFit as affiliate CrossFit NOLA played host to the live announcement of Open Workout 14.3 with Alessandra Pichelli and Stacie Tovar.

Most live shows offer production crews some predictability, some opportunity to plan minute details. Not a live CrossFit event. “Every competition is different, and especially in the Open there’s the element of surprise,” says Kutcher Miller, director of live Open announcements. Miller has been behind the scenes on numerous events, including the X Games. The live Open announcements, he emphasizes, keep the crew on its toes.
