What are the CrossFit Games?

“In implementation, this looks like sport. This is revolutionary. It's as distinctive of the program as are the movements and the charter of functionality and variance. Our workouts are competitive events.

The strength and value of CrossFit lies entirely within our dominance of other athletes. This is a truth divined through competition, not debate.”

From Mike Manning (Scott's CrossFit trainer)
This Harbor City Crossfit athlete trains doing the mainsite WOD's, biking, and fishing. Nine months of WOD's and oly-lift lessons gave Scott the honor of top male athlete at the 2008 Southeast CrossFit Challenge, held 31 May-1 June 2008 in Melbourne, Florida. As a 2-time MVP for Ole Miss Rebel Rugby, Scott still marvels how CrossFit teamwork helps deliver PRs for solo efforts.

Why did you finally decide to enter the CrossFit Games, since you were reluctant at first?

I've only been CrossFitting a little over 9 months, so I kind of feel like a rookie compared to some of the better known athletes of last year's Games, so it's a little intimidating. I decided to go to the games this year for the challenge of competing with folks that can force me to push my performance above and beyond my daily WOD tallies. Although it's only a 2-day event, the competition and camaraderie generated will translate to a lifetime of physical and mental development. Like a hero workout, I expect this years Games will be an intimidating physical battle at the onset, and then settle into a steady war of wills.

How do you think your training and preparation will bear up?

I'm hoping that 6 years of full body beatings, playing rugby, (I earned 2 MVP of the year awards at 'Ole Miss) and 9 months of CrossFit WODs will help me keep the focus needed to do well at this level. I would be ecstatic with a top 20 showing at the Games, considering the talent pool. A good showing like that would likely bring about my early retirement! Really though, I think I would just train harder for next year.

How do you like your chances?

I think I'm pretty well rounded, not the fastest or the strongest but pretty solid "across broad time and modal domains", which seems to be this year's theme! Not being a specialist helped me edge out some tough competition at the Southeast CrossFit Challenge last month, (read Mike G, Ken Gall, Bionic, Lance Mosely, Nick Matics and Leo S., et al) As long as a swim doesn't come out of the hopper, I should do all right.

How 'bout the diet?

I go back and forth between Paleo, beer, Zone, beer, Zone / Paleo, and beer, with about 3 gallons of whole milk a week...just kidding, I drink beer but not THAT much.

Looking forward to competing with you Scott. Good luck at the games. I can't wait to meet so many people that can smoke me.
I'm a west coaster, but i have love for my brothers and sisters from the east coast and the great white north.

Scott, I'm rooting for YOU in the games. We're exactly the same stats (well, at least age/wt/ht). I've only been CFing for 2 months but would love to compete next year. I'll be living vicariously through your success! (I'm a former rugger also from JBU in Arkansas. What position did you play? I was flanker.)
