Bio
Born and raised in Idaho I played a lot of sports growing up. Tennis, football, basketball were the tradition throughout the year, skiing and snowboarding kept the winters entertained. I graduated from the University of Idaho in 2006 and promptly relocated to Southern California with my wife shortly after to go to work for a motorsports facility in Monterey, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. One day I came across an article in Men's Health about internet training resources and found a reference to CrossFit. The "Toughest Workout Ever!" tagline was catchy, so I started checking the website daily. After a full year of checking the website and reading each WOD would I scrounge up the courage to actually try one. "How hard could 8 rounds of air squats really be?" I thought. The rest is history. Now I run the day-to-day of Alec Hanson's gym CrossFit Costa Mesa. My whole life is now invested in CrossFit. It's a career change I was reticent to make but couldn't be happier with the decision. Looking forward to the Open and the 2012 Games.
ATHLETE INFORMATION
How I Eat
I weigh and measure my food
I eat 1-3 full cheat meals per week
I'm on a full Paleo/Zone diet right now, with a moderate cheat day on Saturdays.
How I Train
I workout mostly at a CrossFit Affiliate
I have a coach who determines my programming
I incorporate CrossFit.com workouts
I record my workouts
I am in the middle of a strength cycle right now called German Volume Training. So far, so good. Working into a power program by the time the Open starts. Not ideal for CrossFit competition, but something that I've always wanted to do.
My Athletic Background
I played youth or high school level sports
I played college sports
I regularly play recreational sports
My Experience With CrossFit
I began CrossFit by trying it alone (without a coach)
I have completed the CrossFit Level 1 certificate course
I have attended one or more specialty courses
I train other people
I'm currently the General Manager of CrossFit Costa Mesa. I have trained there for 3 years and after a year of dedicated competitive exercise I decided it was time to get a certification. This led to a small training role, then some media work, now I run the place. Go figure.
My Work/Rest Schedule
I usually only do 1 workout a day
I typically rest 4 or more days per month
Training = Hard Work + Adequate Rest
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
4+ years
I started hitting the occasional CrossFit workout at the Monterey Aquatic Center. Back then I used to think that tabata squats meant you did air squats until you couldn't do air squats anymore. I'd use the pull-up assist machine for Fran and their rusty barbell for deadlifts. Fast forward 5 years and I've got a full gym full of toys to play with, a group of people I love to workout next to, but the sensation is still the same when the workout is over. It's changed my life.
