My journey begins during one of the happiest times in my life, my Honeymoon. However, it was a very bitter sweet time for me. Walking around on the beach with my beautiful new wife I quickly realized just how much weight I had gained over the previous few years. In fact I weighed more during this time then I ever had in my life, right around 250lbs. Once I noticed this I quickly became very self conscious and shy, to the extent that it was affecting the fun and enjoyment I was getting out of my life. After I got back from my Honeymoon I decided to do something about my weight and ensure a happy long life with my new bride. This is when I found CrossFit. I had a couple of friends (and co-workers) that had done something similar and they wanted to try going to CrossFit during our lunch break. My first work out still haunts me today, I felt like I was going to die. The one thing that stuck with me was that several of the members, after completing their own work out, started up again with me rep for rep so that I was not working alone. That was just about 8 months ago. There are a couple of things that really make CrossFit exciting to me. First and foremost is the sense of community, everyone at the box cares about you. There is no posturing, no attitudes, no judgement. Secondly, I love to track, measure, and assess my progress and because the workouts are always timed and measured it gives me numbers to look at and makes it easy to create reachable and reasonable goals. Lastly, most of my life I would have considered myself “an athlete” playing some sport. As the responsibilities of adulthood grew the sports were the first thing to go. Being a CrossFitter allows me to once again call myself “an athlete.” Here are just some fun facts about the progress I have made over the last 8 months. Before: I was unable to complete a pull-up After: I can complete a 50lbs weighted pull-up, in addition to ring muscle-ups Before: I would work out once a week and complain about being sore After: If I go more than a few days without working out I complain about being sore Before: I could barely complete any of the olympic lifts with a a 20KG bar After: I have hit four body weight lifts Before: I was 250lbs and had about 27% body fat After: I am 160lbs and about 14% body fat Before: I would eat fast food 5 times a week and less than ten percent of it would be vegetables After: I eat around a ninety percent Paleo diet with two thirds being vegetables
