Started CF in a garage taught by a 15 yr old girl from a recommendation of a colleague. My baptism was 20 pullups, 500 meter row and airsquats. Having very little athletic background, but having a vast amount of attitude, grinded through sets of 1 and 2 pullups, almost vomitted during the row, and had to squat onto a med ball (actually sitting on it) I finished in a pile of sweat, tears and pain. I swore that it was the most difficult 15 minutes of my life. 2 years later, as a member of Jet City Crossfit Affiliate Team during the 2011 Northwest Regionals, my coach confided in me that after my first WOD in that 24"x12" box, she was asked by her father how I did. "This guy is hopeless" laughing and smiling in her girlish way. I think she saw straight a way that either I would quit after a week, or I would steel myself and commit to the pain. She was laughing because it was most likely the latter; we had alot of work ahead of us. Dropping the ego was first step. Mechanics and technique - drill drill drill was next. Establishing relationships with other CFers and having healthy (non-selfdestructive) outside activities; on top of eating well and sleeping. Finally, strength and power. I feel strong, fast, and confident. When I see pictures of myself now, I'm suprised because in my mind's eye, I don't "see" myself like that. I picture myself as a wandering soul; engaging from one sensation to the next, never staying long enough to accomplish anything constructive. Always in a state of turmoil and deprevity. Now, 3 years later that's not me anymore. My Crossfit journey has taught me balance. I'm happy. I'm having fun. But the one overuling/defining point Crossfit has taught me is; I'm not hopeless anymore. And I like that.
