Unstructured: Chad Furey

"I learned that I can compete with the best when I get my act together."

Unstructured does not mean undisciplined.

Chad Furey, who placed 17th at the Canada East Regional in 2012, has continued to work toward his Master of Engineering over the past year. He trains at CrossFit Kinetics in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

“My schedule is quite busy with school, my own training, others’ training,” he says. “It’s quite hectic, but I enjoy it.”

Furey refuses to follow the convention of long-term planning.

“I don’t follow any structure. All I like to do is train,” he admits. “I don’t care what I’m doing, when I’m doing it, or who I’m doing it with. I’ll just do it.”

Exercising is fun for Furey, and he focuses on keeping it that way. Furey responds and adjusts what he is doing based on his performance. He drew one major conclusion from 2012 Regionals.

“I learned that I can compete with the best when I get my act together,” he says.

Though he describes his condition at the event as “sub-prime,” he still competed well through the very last event. Furey says he can improve his 17th-place finish. He relaxed his eating habits before Regionals in 2012, and suffered the consequences, he says.

“I went in 10 pounds heavier than I weighed in the Open. And it was not 10 pounds of muscle.”

He's recently improved his eating to prepare for the 2013 Open.

“I know how I need to eat, but I have just recently decided to be more strict about following what I’m consuming. In seven days, I already noticed a great difference,” Furey says. “I know I can commit to what has to happen from now until Regionals. I feel if I’m there, I will be one of the top guys, gunning for the top two positions,” he says.

What's most important to Furey, is having fun.

“The competitions are fun and exciting, but its really just people exercising. My hope is that even though I’m going to try my hardest, I want people to see that no matter how I manage to do, I want to look like I’m having a great time, so that others might want to try it, as well,” he says.
